Search Engines + More

One of the most fundamental aspects of any online marketing strategy is how do I deliver the goods in the major search engines, e.g Google and Yahoo. How do I make my site to rank well in Google or Yahoo?

One of the most crucial facets in doing well in the search engines (knowing the basics like killer content are already in place) is earning links to your business. You can do this a couple of different ways, some considered positively by the search engines and some not so favorably.

One of the trusted styles, that the search engines think is okay is link building with articles.

Essentially this requires writing a serious article, rather about something from your business, and then submitting it to a free article directory.

You really cannot lowball the seriousness of link building. If there is one indicator that takes precedence to the search engines, in general, it is links. Sure, there are heaps of other signals, like the domain name, but you are kidding yourself if you conceive you are going to be listed well, and easily heard, if you do not deliver any links.

Building links with articles is easy. It is something the search engines say is okay. And, it adds value to the web, by providing valuable content that might be interesting or useful to users. The real question is what are you waiting for?

Using Blogs for SEO

Search Engines + More

Why Start A Blog?

I knew about blogging and blogs for years before I actually
started my first blog… So this begs the question… “Why
did it take me over 4 years to start my 1st blog?”

Well, why would I want a blog? After all, blogs are just for
geeks, self opinionated left or right wing zealots pushing
some obscure political agenda, teenage school kids waffling
on about their zits and boyfriends or technical journals
full of terms and jargon only a rocket scientist could
understand.

And I never bothered with blogs or the development of the
“blogosphere” again.

Then something changed the way I viewed blogging about July
2004. I was introduced to using a blog as a tool for SEO -
Search Engine Optimization. In the crudest form it was
almost spamming, but done properly, it will get your website
pages spidered almost immediately and indexed in less than a
week.

Blog and Ping

The crude method involved first setting up both a blogger
(.blogspot) blog and a free myYahoo page. You add the RSS or
Atom link from your blog to your myYahoo page, so that your
blog feeds into your myYahoo website.

You then write a page into your blog with links to webpages
that you want Google and Yahoo to find and index. After
posting your new blog entry, you then ping your myYahoo page
to tell it that there’s a new entry at your blog. Then you
go to Yahoo, open your myYahoo page, and the blog headline
should be there.

The assumption is that Yahoo would spider all feeds going
into it’s myYahoo pages and because Google owns Blogger.com
they would spider all new blog entries at Blogger.com …
and in fact this is indeed what happens. Start a blog, add
entry’s to it every day, and in less than a week it will be
spidered as soon almost as you post to it. But you must post
daily.

Hens Lay Eggs (HLE) by Silke Stahl

Search Engines + More

“HLE” is a bit of a joke term, (or possible tongue in cheek could be a better label) coined in my Network Marketing Group - it stands for “Hens Lay Eggs” and is a take on the exponential growth theory - recruit two people, who recruit two, etc, and in six weeks you’ll have 50,000 people sending you $250,000 - the false promise of MLM.

The MLM exponential growth chart makes sense mathematically but is flawed. Unfortunately the ordinary person can’t see the flaw, so buy into it, and you get your 95% of people who do MLM and can’t make it work. We all know the story.

The logic is the same as “Zeno’s arrow”, based on an ancient greek philosopher and mathematician who preceeds Archimedes and Pythagoras. Or in the famous “missing pound” logic problem. More on these in future issues.

But here is the HLE analogy explained:

A hen lays six eggs. If the chicks grow up to be hens they also lay eggs and the hen becomes a “grandmother”. There is no guarantee that all 6 chicks will lay 6 eggs, etc. Also there’s nothing to stop the hen laying another batch of eggs, maybe six, maybe 5 or 8. It’s not set or guaranteed.

Also there is no guarantee that the eggs will hatch into chicks - “don’t count your chickens before they hatch” after all. In this sense, an egg is a prospect, a chick is an affiliate who has signed up. Whether that chick now grows into a hen and lays their own eggs is the next issue. And a lot of that is down to how you - the mentor - or “Mother Hen” - help them develop in their early days, months, even years.

So it is with network marketing, MLM, EMM - whatever you want to call it - we call it “HLE”. As Shakespeare said “a rose by any other name will still give you hay fever”, or to quote Bruce Lee “it’s just a name don’t fuss over it”

The same goes for EMM - Exact Method Marketing - the McDonalds formula example (more on that later).

So what I now do is lead with FREE affiliate programs, the best of which is the SFI scheme with their free online VStore. This means no signup fees, no upgrade fees, no forcing the distributors to buy inventory. The money is ONLY made from the sale of the product and money is ONLY made by helping your downline make sales.

When someone joins under me they HAVE to sell the products and I HAVE to help them, I can’t just sell them the opportunity as they do in so many companies that are DESIGNED to take advantage of the fact that the new affiliate won’t be able to make any sales or recruit any downline. THESE schemes don’t need them to - they have made the money from selling them the opportunity - the startup fee, upgrade fee, and they sell product to the distribrutor who “must stock inventory” - they don’t ever expect him to be able to sell it on - they don’t need him to.

HLE, taken literally, is more “viral”. It’s like when someone sends you a joke on email, if you look, each “level” has dozens of different names the joke has been spidered out to.

That is “viral”, and that is how you pass on the products and opportunity. It spreads like a virus - person to person - which is how network marketing is supposed to work. No spam, no sticking people on autoresponders - no junk mail.

Real people, real products, real opportunities, real results.

Search Engine Optimization Tips For 2005 - Part Two

Search Engines + More

Welcome to the second part of our series of articles on search engine optimization. In the previous article we discussed keywords, domain names, content and keyword density issues. This article moves past that to the nitty gritty of improving your web pages and website for better search engine rankings.

Page Title

It’s truly amazing how many people don’t realize how critical the TITLE tag can be to the success or failure of your website. Your TITLE tag needs to have your most important keyword for that page included in it. This is for the benefit of the search engines.

From a visitors point of view it also needs to entice them to click on your title tag when they see it in the search engine results. If your page is about PDA Accessories don’t just use that phrase in the TITLE tag.

Dress it up a bit. For example “PDA Accessories For The Busy Geek” or “Need Accessories for Your PDA? Come right in!” Those examples took me 10 seconds to come up with. You can do far better with a little more time and effort.

META Keyword Tag

Anybody still using the Meta Keyword tag as their sole search engine optimization method please leave the room. Go on get out and don’t come back.

The Meta Keyword tag is all but dead to the search engines. When building your pages it’s still worth including but simply put in the top 3 or 4 keywords that are relevant to your business and leave it at that. Do not spend hours coming up with hundreds of keywords to stuff into the Meta Keyword tag. It’s a total waste of time and anybody who tells you different has no idea what they’re talking about.

META Description Tag

This still has some limited value for your SEO work. When Google or other search engines display search results they display the contents of the TITLE tag and your Meta Description tag (if present) or a random selection of text from the page. Your Meta Description tag will take priority if present.

The Meta Description tag is still worth using. Your most important keyword should be in there and again you need to work this keyword into an eye catching phrase or sentence. Don’t just copy and paste the main keyword in there.

If the Meta Description tag is used well, in conjunction with the TITLE tag, then it can make your displayed search result more inviting to the potential visitor. Again don’t spend more than a few minutes on your Meta Description tag but do make sure that you include it on each page. One final note - make the Meta Description for each page different; don’t just recycle the same one over and over.

RSS

Stands for Really Simple Syndication and is probably something you’ve heard a lot about over the last few months. RSS allows you to display the news items and/or content from other sites on your website as part of a “news feed”. This adds a huge amount of value to your site from a vistors point of view - they don’t need to leave your site to get the latest news on a given topic. The other benefit is that search engines love seeing fresh content on websites.

At the moment there’s a huge upsurge in the use of RSS for search engine optimization. The question is does it work? Yes it does. Using RSS can most definitely encourage the search engines to come back to visit your site more often. How does it work? Well again that goes beyond the scope of this article so please refer to our site for more information.

Blogs

Also called Web Logs are basically online diaries. For a long time these were used solely by… well…. geeks to record their thoughts and as a way of sharing information on Star Trek. Seriously though initially blogs were never seen as anything more than a curiousity.

Recently with the increased visibility of RSS blogs have also seen their profile rise. Why? Well because many RSS feeds feature blog content. Which means what exactly? It means your blog could be included on and linked to from thousands of websites all over the world. Are you seeing the possiblities? There are some other nuances to consider but to mention them here would give the game away completely and certain ebook authors would put a price on my head for giving away their secrets.
