Gambling has always been the cornerstone of revenue for Las Vegas, but as of late, the poker boom has become a real revenue generator for the state of Nevada. With 106 poker online rooms operating in the state, 155.7 million dollars have since been generated for the state in 2009.

Since 2003, poker play has nearly doubled in Vegas, and the rest of the US has seen a pretty high increase as well. According to the American Gaming Association, 11 percent of Americans have played some form of poker, either live or poker online, in the past year. And players in all age groups have increased except in the age 65 and up group.

One of the keys to Vegas’ success is that the casinos are always competing with one another to draw business. This leads to some interesting offers. There are only two things you should really be worried about the majority of the time. The board paring two aces and another card pairing. That would give your opponent a higher full house. Some poker online sites attract several hundred or thousands of new players daily. Whether it be for play money, some recreational low stakes fun, or for some high rolling gambling, the players that come in droves come in many different flavors. Among these players will be some total noobs.

And by noobs I really mean poker neophytes. These are the players who are just learning the rules and have no idea about what the term “making plays” even means. They are the players who are impossible to bluff because if they have a pair, then they think they have the winning hand. They’ll draw to the river despite the lack of pot odds. And they generally are just bad at poker online.

But here’s how we react. We call them donks. We call them fish and berate them. But what we’re really doing, only we don’t realize it, is we are projecting our own level of play on them when in reality they don’t know what we know.

We get in situations with these players who are still wet behind the ears and expect them to notice and give us credit for our check-raise bluff on the turn, when to them the term itself is a foreign language. What we’re doing is overplaying our cards. And it’s hard a lot of the time to not give people credit for knowing such elementary terms as pot odds and turn and river.

So when you get on a table with this player and you want to automatically label him as a super aggressive donk who plays on a whim. You’re probably partially right. The player is probably playing on a whim. But observe this player and see how he reacts when different moves your recognize are played on him and they don’t work the way they’re “supposed to.” If you notice a pattern, it may just be that you have a player who is very new to the game. So don’t degrade him for not recognizing your “brilliant” plays, instead, just let your cards talk when you’re in pots with him. Get in there where it’s almost impossible for you to get out drawn, or when you have a monster draw and he’s not betting enough to keep you off your draws. Sometimes you have to just stop overplaying the game, and let the chips fall where the cards tell them to. ks muc8 r

Many of us learned to play poker long ago. We learned to play casual poker online on kitchen tables and school yards. There has been a recent spike to make poker the game of the masses. If I was asked to make a list of the top three most important and helpful online poker books that I would recommend to a beginning poker player, David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth’s ‘Hold ‘em Poker for Advanced Players’ would by far make the list every time. While most other poker books tend towards starting with the basics and building the game from the ground up, this book, as it is deemed for advanced players, starts with the basics already assumed, and begins building on stronger concepts from the get-go.

The book goes on to elucidate all sorts of medium to advanced poker skill sets including discussion of how to play all ranges of hands from all positions, how to read your opponent, how to use pot odds and implied odds, and the function of math in the game of poker. It is a much more analytical approach than some of the more ‘feel based’ books you’ll find such as Brunson’s Super System and the like, but it builds the game into one more focused on math and betting while the odds are in your favor, rather than bluffing and reading.

I like this method of learning as much of the feel based approach toward poker is not something to be learned as much as it is something to be experienced, and Sklansky and Malmuth’s book allow you the tools you need to begin to assume this role, while not going broke in the process. This book is a ‘thinker’s guide’ to the game of poker, and involves a bit more analysis and logic than other books would incur, but in the end your statistical analysis and study will pay off, as the numbers and odds, when stacked in your favor, pile up on your side.

There’s so much specific terminology to Texas Holdem that it can seem to be a language in and of itself. If you’re new to poker, it can be easy to get lost in the phrases, unless you’ve got a handy blog to give you a vocab lesson or two. Lets start with the cards.

Pocket Cards The two cards that you’re dealt face down. These cards can only be played by you.

The Flop After the first round of betting, the dealer will place three cards face up on the table. These are community cards, meaning they can be played by anybody, and they’re followed by another round of betting.

The Turn After the second round of betting, another community card will be placed face up on the table.

The River After the third round of betting, the last community card is shown. This is followed by a final round of betting.

Once the cards are on the table, your job is to make the best five-card hand out of the seven available, all the while making everyone else think that you have the opposite of what you have and figuring out exactly what they have.
